This is one of the 17 paintings I just submitted for “The Storyteller,” a new children’s book I’ve been working on over the past several months. The story’s based in coastal Togo and involves, as you can see, a mermaid-like being found in the folk tales and myths of several African countries. She’s called Mamiwata, a “water goddess.” The story is contemporary, but has elements of magical realism.
